Weed Man began with a single service – weed control – but quickly grew into something much bigger. The Weed Man story starts with Desmond (Des) Rice, who founded the company in 1970 in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. Early on, Des recognized a need for controlling broadleaf weeds and protecting the lush, green yards that define residential life in North America. By 1976, he had expanded through franchising, and today Weed Man has grown to hundreds of locally owned and operated franchises across Canada and the United States.

From the very beginning, Des emphasized prevention and balance. He understood that the best path to a healthy lawn was through proper mowing, watering, and fertilization – practices that encouraged strong turf and naturally discouraged weeds. This forward-thinking approach set Weed Man apart and, over time, has proven to be the right one.
